Rhinoplasty Q & A

What is rhinoplasty surgery?

Rhinoplasty surgery is more commonly recognized by its other name: a nose job. Before your rhinoplasty surgery, the Diamond Surgical Institute team talks to you about your purpose for getting the surgery and your preferred nasal shape.

When considering a change in shape, keep in mind that the nose of a friend or celebrity might not be a great fit for the shape of your face. The team helps you find one that’s the right fit for you.

Not all rhinoplasty surgeries are meant to change the way your nose looks. Your nose is a functional organ that helps you breathe. If you break it or if it’s malformed, a nose job can open it up to optimize your breathing or restructure it to the way it was meant to be.

What can I do with a rhinoplasty?

There are numerous changes you can make to the inside or outside structure of your nose. During the consultation appointment, you can speak with your provider about the following and other possibilities.

  • Rebuilding a deviated septum
  • Fixing a broken nose
  • Straightening a crooked nose
  • Making your nose more symmetrical
  • Reducing a bump in your nose
  • Reducing the size of your bridge
  • Reducing the size of the tip of your nose
  • Making your nostrils smaller

If you were in a terrible accident that crushed your nose, a nose job is an absolute necessity for your face to look normal and to allow you to breathe comfortably for the rest of your life.

How does rhinoplasty surgery work?

Rhinoplasty surgery is highly personalized. The overall strategy for your surgery depends on the changes your surgeon makes to your nose. The team at Diamond Surgical Institute uses these two general methods:

Closed rhinoplasty

During a closed rhinoplasty, your surgeon makes incisions inside your nose, so the scars are not visible from the outside. The method involves less swelling, too, but it is more complicated for your surgeon to perform and isn’t available for more extensive changes needing cartilage grafts.

Open rhinoplasty

During an open rhinoplasty, your scar is still relatively hidden. Your surgeon makes incisions in your nose but makes an additional one between your nostrils. This is necessary if you’re making extensive changes to your nose, and it requires a little bit more downtime after the surgery.

Recovering from rhinoplasty is easier than you might think. It’s an outpatient procedure, so you won’t have to spend the night in a hospital bed. The recovery takes a couple of weeks at most, and then you can get back to normal life. However, you might still see swelling for up to a full year after your surgery.
